Job/Project Description:
The Mecklenburg County Environmental Sustainability program works with County staff and citizen advisory board members to catalyze the development and implementation of sustainable policies and practices throughout the County. One priority of the Environmental Sustainability Plan is the development of a Strategic Utility Plan. This internship provides an opportunity to aide County staff and the County’s Energy Team in finalization of this plan. Intern will become familiar with the many sustainable operational practices and policies at Mecklenburg County regarding our utilities, while receiving hands-on experience developing a Strategic Utility Plan. Internships are competitive and require an in-person interview.

*(Utility Plan is meant to incorporate electricity, natural gas, and water.)

Responsibilities and projects will include:
• Review of existing County Energy Plan as well as example local government Utility Plans from around the country.
• Update existing databases of County department and contractor practices that incorporate utility operations.
• Conduct web-based research.
• Identify best practices today and into the future through interviews of appropriate County staff.
• Create visual displays to convey findings.
• Draft final Strategic Utility Plan in concert with the County’s Energy Team.

The intern has the opportunity to supplement the project descriptions with aspects that may help to better meet educational requirements. The project is expected to produce a written deliverable with the anticipation of presenting findings to the appropriate County committee, as necessary.

Written feedback will be provided to the intern at the completion of the project per the agreed upon evaluation matrix. The intern will provide written feedback on the internship to the Supervisory contact.

Experience/ Skills Desired: Extremely organized; self motivated; perseverant; analytical; good communicator and team player. Passionate about advancing environmental sustainability through utility conservation and efficiency techniques.

It is expected that Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint will be some of the tools utilized by the intern.

Intern will have access to a computer and desk space provided by the County. Intern is expected to work closely with the Environmental Policy Administrator and Asset Management staff.
