Raleigh signals interest in live dealers at Cherokee casino near Asheville

...Over the past decade, the casino has raised the incomes in Western North Carolina by 10 percent and was responsible for adding more than $350 million to the local economy last year alone, according to a recent report by University of North Carolina researchers. Additionally, more than $51 million in grants have been provided through casino revenue to help in the creation of new businesses, broadband Internet and sustainable development projects

Tracking Oil Spills and Preventing Future Disasters

It was a little over a year ago that BP’s deepwater horizon oil rig exploded, sending millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the worst oil spill in U.S history. From oil-covered birds to the spreading oil slick on the water, it was an environmental disaster like we’ve never seen before. Now, scientists and mathematicians have developed a new predictive tool that could track the spread of oil spills even before they happen. “Oh my God. It was so huge,” Andreas Teske, Ph.D., a marine microbiologist at the University of North Carolina told Ivanhoe.

A Bigger ‘Battle of the Buildings’

...That is how Maura Beard, director of strategic communications for Energy Star, describes the Environmental Protection Agency’s national “Battle of the Buildings” competition, which celebrated its successes thus far last week with a midpoint weigh-in for the contenders. ...Last year’s winner was a college dorm, Morrison Residence Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is said to have reduced its energy consumption by 36 percent.
