The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School district is the first school system in the country to earn Green Plus Certification. Awarded by the Institute for Sustainable Development, Green Plus helps small businesses and non-profits assess and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. The CHCCS district has retrofitted buildings to reduce energy consumption; manages pests without chemicals; and replaced Styrofoam trays in school cafeterias with biodegradable trays.
