Air and Environmental Health Research Internship
The Center for Aerosol and Nanomaterials Engineering at RTI International is offering an exciting Air and Environmental Health Research Internship for summer 2012. The internship will provide the student the opportunity to contribute to environmental research efforts to better understand children’s exposure to air pollution and the impacts on their health. The intern will be mentored by RTI experts in Aerosol Engineering and Environmental Health, as well as, gain hands-on experience in a multidisciplinary research laboratory and collecting environmental data. The intern will also have access to professional development trainings, networking with RTI executives, and access to the RTI Intern Alumni Network to further enrich their learning experiences at RTI.

Responsibilities
The intern responsibilities may include the following as well as other activities based on the intern’s interests and qualifications/previous experience:
• Interact with RTI personnel as a member of the study team,
• Assist with field data collection of 6 types of environmental samples inside and outside residences,
• Prepare and process environmental samples to characterize airborne particulate pollutants,
• Download data collected with high-tech instruments using instrument specific software,
• Validate environmental samples and data by performing simple statistics in Excel.
Qualifications
• Graduate or undergraduate (junior or senior) student studying an engineering field (e.g., environmental, chemical, mechanical, etc…)
• Attention to details and familiarity with laboratory procedures is required
• Ability to work independently and follow directions
• Willingness to be flexible and work collaboratively with others
• Interest in environmental health, characterization of particulate matter, and environmental exposure assessment
• Excellent communication, analytical, and multitasking skills
• US citizen or permanent resident, required
Additional Information
Internship is for summer 2012 at RTI’s headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC. This is a 12 week internship from May to August 2012, start and end dates are flexible. This is an unpaid internship and RTI requires that students receive course credit, fulfill academic program requirements, or obtain outside funding support (e.g., fellowship, internship award, other). Students should consult with their school for the appropriate procedures and to determine whether this internship will merit course credit/fulfill academic requirements.
NOTE: Applicants whose graduation dates are between August 2010-May 2012 and are residents of Wake or Johnson County (in NC) may be eligible to receive financial support of up to $12/hr for this internship from a federal grant. If this applies to you please indicate this in your application.
