College of Charleston – Academic Sustainability Coordinator – SC

The Office of Sustainability (Division of Business Affairs) at the College of Charleston seeks to hire an Academic Coordinator. This is a unique “hybrid” position that provides significant opportunities for both personal and professional growth in shaping campus and societal sustainability. This non-tenure track position will involve in-classroom and online teaching, engaging in scholarly research, conducting faculty/staff workshops, assisting with the internship program and campus projects, targeted operational management of campus sustainability, regional sustainable development coordination, and grant-writing. The position requires teaching three (3) courses per year.

The Office of Sustainability is the campus hub for teaching, scholarly research and operational management of sustainability. The candidate should be capable of and interested in contributing to all three dimensions in building their professional and academic record. We also have a team-based approach to learning, working and interacting; so, the workload to the diverse duties (above) will be shared—to the extent possible. Therefore, the candidate should be comfortable working as part of a collaborative team. A candidate with a foundation in sustainability from ANY discipline is encouraged to apply. Those general disciplinary areas that will be given preference are urban/regional studies or planning, geography, political science, sociology, business—especially entrepreneurship and management, environmental science/studies, engineering, policy/administration, architecture/design, and sustainability science. Preference will be given to broad, interdisciplinary training and diverse methodological skills. Experience with campus sustainability, administration, and/or community outreach is beneficial, especially work or research completed in core sustainability areas such a food/agriculture, waste, transportation, energy, built environment, development, public health or human well-being.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand (or by the time of employment in Summer 2013), experience in higher education teaching, and some track record of scholarly research. Interested candidates should submit a letter of application that comprehensively addresses how their disciplinary training, experience and skill set fit the position, and how it corresponds to their overall career path. Please also include a brief biographical account of the trials, tribulations, and resultant decisions made that led you to the field of sustainability. Candidates should also include evidence of their outside or non-academic employment, achievements, associations, and initiatives (providing a separate letter if necessary), evidence of solid teaching (online and/or in-class) through syllabi and student evaluations, a CV, writing sample, and three letters of recommendation (preferably two academic and one non-academic who can comment on administrative and leadership skills) by April 1, 2013. Submit all materials as a pdf portfolio to sustainability@cofc.edu and also submit a formal employment application at http://jobs.cofc.edu
