Occupational Summary:
The Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) Program advances the mission of the Nicholas School of the Environment by providing innovative educational and outreach opportunities designed specifically for environmental, business and community leaders. The DEL Program includes a portfolio of course options that emphasize interdisciplinary and global themes, strategic approaches to environmental management, communication and effective leadership. This position will specifically plan, coordinate and assist with the operations of the Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) Program, including the online master’s degree, continuing and executive education courses and certificate programs and community outreach. This position will assist in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the existing distance learning master's program. Reports to the DEL Program Director.

Work Performed:
(75%) Assist with planning, development and coordination of DEL Programs, primarily focused on all activities associated with the online Master of Environmental Management program. The emphasis of this position is to assist in the development and implementation of DEL-MEM programming, including, but not limited to, coordinating with the DEL director, faculty, communicating with students, recruiting, and assisting in exploring new program opportunities, including marketing. Frequent interaction with students, Nicholas School faculty and staff, University departments, and outside agencies and schools, including contractors, is expected.

Assist with the DEL-Master of Environmental Management degree, including, but not limited to:
  • Respond to questions from current students enrolled in the DEL-MEM program.
  • Respond to inquiries from prospective students.
  • Communicate with students and faculty regarding upcoming events and deadlines.
  • Correspond with interested and enrolled students to provide information concerning programs, policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement periodic course, program, and alumni evaluations. Collect and summarize data for distribution to faculty.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and summarizing of DEL-MEM application materials.
  • Manage special projects including correspondence with students and faculty, collecting data, developing schedules, etc.
  • Assist in semester preparation, including providing registration information, developing semester schedules, course materials, student manual updates, learning management site (LMS), acquiring copyright permissions, etc.
  • Plan, implement, and attend place-based sessions, both on and off-campus, and course fieldtrips. Place-based sessions are held 2-3 times per year. Assist in the planning and coordination of all place-based session, including the biannual trip to Washington DC, including logistics and coordinating meetings with various leaders. Assist in management and coordination while on site for these trips. Assist faculty, as needed, in planning elective course fieldtrips.
  • Work with the Staff Assistant in coordinating special events (socials, dinners)
  • Collaborate with the DEL Director in program development, new initiatives and recruiting strategies.
  • Become proficient with online webconference technology and other technology used to facilitate online learning and teaching. Train students, TA’s, and faculty for online learning and teaching.
  • Develop successful recruiting strategies for the DEL-MEM program, including marketing and virtual and in-person information sessions.
  • Design evaluations; monitor program effectiveness through evaluation of content and instructor performance.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Nicholas School departments to identify program, student, and alumni needs; to strengthen existing programs and identify new programs; to identify areas of efficiencies.
  • Ensure program website (DEL-MEM) is current and informative and maintained as an effective recruiting tool. Update and provide direction in redesign as needed. • Manage program requirements for students; monitor progress throughout program. Maintain student records.
  • Perform activities within a budget
  • Assist in implementation of promotion/publicity of program to include development of marketing strategies, design and preparation of brochures, postcards, posters, application materials, the website, and other publicity material for publication and circulation in specialized or mass media; prepare and revise mailing lists.
  • Brainstorm program ideas, themes, dates and frequency; review and propose program policies; prepare faculty for online teaching; develop online teaching manuals and student handbooks; coordinate and develop on-campus sessions.
  • Network with other distance learning programs at Duke University to identify new and emerging trends and technology. Stay abreast of distance learning trends and technologies. Propose new initiatives to DEL Director.
  • Plan and schedule work priorities in accordance with program goals and objectives and deadlines.
(15%) Assist with planning, development and coordination of executive education courses and certificate programs, including, but not limited to, preparing course materials, facilitating courses, and communicating with participants.
(10%) Additional job responsibilities may include assisting with, office logistics, and other special events, including, but not limited to:
  • Develop and implement appropriate information systems in support of program activities and provide adequate reference of data, documentation of procedures and processes and evaluation of program results.
  • Serve as liaison with internal and external entities, including Nicholas School offices, University departments and outside sources.
  • Research, compile and analyze information in support of Program’s activities, prepare reports and analyses identifying trends and making conclusions (for example, identify potential community outreach avenues consistent with the program’s mission, conduct research to identify training needs, competitors, advertising opportunities and markets for existing and new programs).
  • Run errands and supply pick-ups on and off campus.
  • Advise supervisor(s) on status of current activities, additional or expanded program requirements and appropriate recommendations for future action.
  • Plan and schedule work priorities in accordance with program goals and objectives and deadlines.
  • Participate in regular planning meetings to keep abreast of all DEL programs.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Skills/Requirements:

Work requires proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, mail merges, and email. Must be comfortable and proficient with technology, including web-based programs, presentation hardware, etc.

As part of a professional program at a highly respected university, candidate must exhibit strong attention to detail in all work products.

Must possess strong communication (oral and written), and customer service skills. Must be responsive.

Must demonstrate initiative, good organizational skills, handle complex assignments and produce quality work, and manage deadlines in a fast paced environment.

Must be able to manage multiple projects at once. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must be a self-starter.

Requires flexible hours (some early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends) and a willingness to travel to participate in all place-based sessions (on and off-campus). Must be willing to travel 3-5 weeks per year, or as needed.

Valid driver’s license is required. Must be willing to drive rented vans or vehicles to transport students and instructors. Occasional heavy lifting required during set-up and breakdown of events.

Must be willing to complete a security clearance check for government contract courses.

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical, research and organizational skills generally acquired through four years of postsecondary education.

Experience:

Work generally requires two-three years of experience to acquire strong skills in administrative or project research responsibilities as well as accepted office management, communications and research practices. Experience in the environmental profession is a plus.
