DELTA Student Energy Internship Program
Developing Energy Leaders Through Action (DELTA) seeks applications for a summer internship with the UNC Energy Services in Chapel Hill, NC. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
The UNC Institute for the Environment is partnering with multiple departments and professional schools across campus to bring undergraduate and graduate students an internship program, Developing Energy Leaders Through Action (DELTA), which will promote the development of a skilled workforce of trained professionals in energy fields. DELTA is made possible through federal ARRA funding, which has been administered to the UNC Institute for the Environment through the North Carolina State Energy Office. UNC Energy Services Department provides heating and cooling, distributes electricity, and manages water and stormwater resources. Critical to the consistent and sustainable management of these energy resources, is system planning, analysis, and reporting, all of which can be enhanced with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Utilizing GIS, Energy Services is able to view spatial relationships and integrate various data sources, thus improving decision making processes. In addition, Energy Services has future plans to use a GIS portal in the Energy Dashboard Project to report real-time energy usage for campus buildings and utilize thermal imagery to analyze potential heat loss for the steam distribution system.
Duties and Responsibilities: An intern will gather existing utility records for input into GIS, perform on-screen digitizing to capture utility systems in the GIS database, and perform field checks on campus to verify accuracy of information and collect additional attributes. The intern will also utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to collect GIS data and work closely with GIS staff and utility engineers to verify utility system connectivity. Hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am-5 pm and a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required. The intern(s) will work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks and will receive $12 - 18 per hour depending on skills and experience.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a current undergraduate/graduate student or recent graduate with knowledge of GIS and GPS principles and applications (preferred), experience using ESRI ArcGIS or similar package (preferred) and the ability to read construction plans and maps. The candidate must be able to work outside and participate in moderate physical activities. Strong communication skills are required and the ability to effectively work as part of a team. Experience using Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Excel, and Access) is helpful. Experience using CADD software and reading utility drawing and/or experience with field data collection and GPS equipment is a plus.
