The Clean Water Education Partnership (CWEP), a program staffed by the Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG), seeks an enthusiastic and creative Intern to assist with developing and delivering outreach about stormwater.
In addition, the Intern will coordinate and manage volunteers and logistics for the Upper Neuse River Basin Association’s (UNRBA) outreach at the Eno River Festival, which includes staffing and supporting volunteers in hands-on education during the festival (July 4 weekend). The Intern will also provide administrative support to TJCOG, CWEP, and UNRBA as needed. The successful candidate must be efficient, self-motivated and able to work independently, able to meet deadlines, able to work with and coordinate volunteers, and have their own reliable vehicle.
Intern: $15 per hour
Work Schedule
The intern will be expected to work between 12 and 20 hours/week during the period of the end of May through August with a combination of on-site and telecommuting hours. After August, there may be the opportunity to stay on for a year-round intern position that would include approximately 10 hours of work per week. The intern must be available to work the weekend of July 4th (July 2nd through 5th).
About CWEP
CWEP is a cooperative effort between approximately 30 local governments in the Tar-Pamlico, Neuse, and Cape Fear River Basins to protect and improve water quality through public education and outreach. CWEP uses a variety of means to educate the public about the importance of watershed stewardship including radio, television, internet, and web media. CWEP also helps its local government members and supports their outreach efforts by providing tools and materials. CWEP is governed by a Steering Committee that is composed of representatives from each partner jurisdiction.
Description of Work
The Intern will be expected to 1) assist with maintenance and improvement of the CWEP Education Booth and storage facility; 2) assist with booth reservations; 3) research potential outreach events and coordinate with CWEP partners to take advantage of these opportunities to conduct outreach; 4) assist CWEP partners with booth retrieval, set-up, and return; 5) help document booth processes and record the number of people that visit the booth during events; and 6) help with additional CWEP activities as needed. In addition, the intern may be asked to assist in researching or implementing mass media outreach campaigns via web, print, television, and/or radio mediums.
In helping with the 2011 Festival for the Eno River, the Intern will be expected to 1) coordinate two adjacent booths at the Festival; 2) contact and solicit volunteers; 3) coordinate volunteer schedules; 4) coordinate set-up and logistics; and oversee the booth and volunteers during the festival. This is the fifth year of our participation in this event and the process for doing this coordination is well documented and straightforward.
Training and Experience Requirements
Training and/or education towards a degree in communications, journalism, regional planning, environmental studies, environmental management, or related field is highly desired. Experience coordinating volunteers, events, and/or outreach are a plus.
