New Bicycle and Greenways Map Available

The Town of Chapel Hill has prepared a Bicycle and Greenways Map that shows bicycle lanes, greenways and bus routes throughout Chapel Hill, as well as detailed maps of six greenways and the planned paths for future greenways. The map is now available to the public.

The map was made possible through combined grants totaling $12,000 from the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization and $5,000 from a North Carolina Adopt A Trail grant to the Friends of the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department. The map was designed by cartographer Steve Spindler of Jenkintown, Pa., with input from citizen volunteers serving on the Greenways Commmission and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Group and an interdepartmental staff team.

The total land area of Chapel Hill is 21.3 square miles, and about 11 percent of this is dedicated to parks and open spaces. Since the Town Council adopted an open space plan in 1965, there are now about 1,200 acres of park, open space and greenway easements totaling 12 miles of trails.

The map can be picked up from Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd,; Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices, 200 Plant Rd.; Chapel Hill Community Center, 120 S. Estest Drive; Aquatics Center at Homestead Park; Hargraves Community Center, 216 N. Roberson St.; and the Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive. The map soon will be made available online.
